Sobhana Jaya-Madhavan

Sobhana graduated from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai) with an MSW degree (Medical and Psychiatric Social Work) in 1991 and worked in the NGO sector in India and Malaysia prior to immigrating to Canada in 1995. She has over 20 years of experience developing and leading teams in different parts of the world. She is a relationship architect, social good advisor, and crypto enthusiast.
In 2015, she was nominated for the BC Medal of Good Citizenship award. Her experiences include developing high-performance teams, community engagement, child welfare, public relations, government relations, strategic partnerships, Aboriginal relations, training, mentoring, leadership development, diversity, inclusion and communications. She is deeply committed to collegiality, collaboration and transparency. She inspires and transforms teams and organizations. She is multilingual with Canadian and international educational, volunteer, and work experience.
Sobhana previously worked with the British Columbia (BC) Government (1995-2015) and served in various front line and senior management positions (Director, Executive Director and Acting Assistant Deputy Minister). She completed her Ph.D. Candidacy in Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria in 2010.
She moved to India in November 2015 to join NewGen KnowledgeWorks as Associate Vice President - Organizational Excellence and Head HR. Her portfolio included Strategic Human Resources, Continuous Quality Improvement, Executive Training, People and Culture, Organizational Transformation, CSR, Business Development, and Stakeholder/External Relations.
Since August 2017, She has served SFU’s Associate Vice-President (AVP) External Relations. She engages with diverse internal and external partners, and all levels of government, international, national, provincial, and local agencies and diverse communities to strengthen strategic relationships and lead work on shared goals.
